Thunderstruck 2012 | Indiana Rocketry's Annual Spring Rocket Launch

March 30-April 1, 2012 / Ash Grove, IN

Welcome to the first midwest rocketry gathering of 2012! Thunderstruck 2012 is Indiana Rocketry’s premier launch event, with one day of Tripoli Research flying on March 30th, and two days of all-ages commercial activity on March 31st and April 1st, all from our Ash Grove field located halfway between Chicago and Indianapolis. With even more Estes-to-M-capable pads and two 12′+ towers for those big projects, this year’s event is shaping up to be another excellent launch. Join us for the fun!

Waiver & Hours of Operation
Thunderstruck will operate under FAA Class II Rockets rules, with the following airspace allowances:

  • 16,000′ MSL standing, sunrise-to-sunset
  • 22,000′ MSL windows on-demand

Standard range operation hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. There will be a Class 1 Night Launch on Saturday night, beginning at the end of civil twilight (8:30 PM) and ending at 10 PM, or when we run out of rockets.

Special Projects
Bringing a special project? Let us know, and we’ll add it to the Featured Projects page! Any projects requiring special ground support considerations (e.g., extra long rail) should contact one of the BoD members to schedule capability. Also, if you’re planning to bring a large ground-start cluster project, please let us know so we can make sure it’s as safe as possible. Our goal is to help you get your rocket in the air — let us know what we can do to help!

Rocketry Vendors
All vendors are welcome to attend Thunderstruck 2012! We typically allot space along the north side of the road for vendor parking; space is given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so show up early to secure your prime real estate. We hope that all attending vendors will donate to our event raffle, as well; contact one of the BoD members for more information. Please let us know what we can do to help you serve the rocketry community.

Certifications
Tripoli Indiana will have a prefect and two TAP members on hand for Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 certifications, and Indiana Rocketry has an L3CC available for those pursuing the NAR L3 route. Several additional certifying authorities from other clubs will be on hand as well. New to rocketry and just wanting to certify? Indiana Rocketry has 29mm hardware and small reloads on hand for certification attempts; get in touch with our prefect for details!

T-Shirts & Raffles
Indiana Rocketry will be printing two-color t-shirts for the event this year; we’ll unveil the design shortly. All merchandise items (including raffle tickets) are available for pre-order when you register to fly; add them to your cart to guarantee availability, as last year’s shirts were gone almost immediately! In addition to the normal raffle of rocket-related stuff, we’ll also be conducting a 50/50 raffle on site both days, so come prepared.

Food Vendor
The Boy Scouts have confirmed their presence for this year’s event as our food vendor; they’ll be serving the same excellent grilled fare at reasonable prices. Bring cash!

Media Coverage
ROCKETS Magazine was on-hand for Thunderstruck 2010, performing photo and video duty. Their DVD teaser contains some great clips from that event. All photos are on their website for purchase, along with the DVD set. Photographers will be covering Thunderstruck 2012 for future inclusion in an article, as well, so get your camera faces ready!
